Sony's first NEX cameras were The NEX-5 and NEX-3, and the NEX-5 actually was slightly smaller than its "kid brother." As its name suggests, the NEX-5N retains the acclaimed look and feci of that original compact model, and builds on it.

A new I6.l-megapixcl Sony Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor replaces the NEX-5's 14.2-mcgapixcl unit, alone with a specially opTum?cd Bton? image-processing engine, providing ISOs up to 25.600. Release time lag has been improved to a miniscule 20 ms, and AF speed has been improved, as well.

Another new NEX-5N feature is its touch-screen LCD monitor. It's a 3.0-inch. 921,600-dot tilting unit like those of the other NEX cameras, but it's the only one with touch-screen capability. Just touch an object in the scene on-screen, and the AF system will focus on it and track it as it moves throughout the scene.

REVIEW SAMSUNG NX11

► The Samsung NX range of mirrorless system cameras isn't as well known as the Panasonic G, Olympus PEN or Sony NEX ranges and, judging by the disappointing NX100, perhaps it deserves to stay that way. However, the NX11 addresses our primary criticisms of the NX100, adding a flash and an optically stabilised lens.

Unlike the NX100, and most other mirrorless system cameras, the NX11 looks like an SLR after a crash diet rather than a super-sized compact. Lens aside, it's much slimmer than any SLR, and peering through the viewfinder to see an LCD screen reveals its true nature. This screen isn't quite as big and detailed as the Panasonic G3's electronic viewfinder (see What's New, Shopper 284), but it's not far behind. Unlike the G3, the NX11's viewfinder switches on automatically when the camera is raised to the eye. Both cameras also have impressive 3in screens. However, while the NX11'sAMOLED technology produces richer colours, the G3's is articulated.

A PROMISING WORK-IN-PROGRESS - SAMSUNG NX11

You can be forgiven if you think you've seen this camera in these pages before. The Samsung NX11, successor to the one-year old NX10, not only looks virtually identical to its predecessor, it's almost the same.

As far as we can tell, the only changes have been the addition of Lens Priority, Sound Picture and Panorama modes, and a curvier, easier-to-hold grip. Samsung says that the auto-focus has been improved over the NXlOO's, which was improved over the NXlO's. And it comes built-in with i-Function support - but the NXlO's firmware can also be upgraded to do the same. In short, the NX11 isn't so much an attractive upgrade as it is a slightly more refined version of the NX10.
